Chrysostomos Giannoulakis is invited by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the European University of Valencia to deliver a guest lecture at the Intercultural Communication course within the Bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Leisure Management. His lecture entitled “Ethos, Pathos, Logos – The persuasion journey in the tourism industry”, will provide an intercultural and interdisciplinary overview of oral and written persuasion through rhetoric and its applications in the tourism discourse. This will occur by initially illustrating how the rhetoric art was developed and practiced in ancient Greece. Then, key elements and examples of tourism rhetoric will be shared in a cross-disciplinary manner. Finally, contemporary challenges in effective and ethical use of tourism rhetoric will be discussed, while focusing on critical thinking and cross-cultural communication skills for tourism professionals. Students will apply the aforementioned concepts via a debate on a critical tourism-related subject, all in the spirit of an “ensyntropic” approach to defending one’s own stance outside of stereotypes and conventional restrictions.
